Little practised in Arabia before the advent of Islam in the 7th century, Arabic writing underwent, with the revelation of the Koran, an extraordinary development.

Common to the entire Moslem world, Arabic script and language acquired a highly symbolic dimension. Apart from its utilitarian function, it began playing a significant decorative role.
