Pigments through the Ages

Paintings are made from mud and a stick with hairs…

Pigments are the basis of all paints, and have been used for millennia. They are ground colored material. Early pigments were simply as ground earth or clay, and were made into paint with spit or fat. Modern pigments are often sophisticated masterpieces of chemical engineering.

This exhibit includes most important pigments used through the early 20th century.

How Artists have colored our lives

Zen Paintings & Calligraphy

An important point in the appreciation of Zen art is the idea that the character and spiritual power of the monk or nun is transmitted into the painting by the concentration of the artist at the time it was brushed. In Japanese this spiritual quality is called bokki. This art is intended to be appreciated not only with your eyes, but with your feeling and intuition as well.

iKlimt – The Life and Work of Gustav Klimt

iKlimt is an evocative, beautifully designed interactive site about the life and work of Gustav Klimt.

A very serene interface with music, a nice compilation of klimt’s artwork, and well-written essays about the Austrian artist. If you’re viewing a painting, you can select a magnifying tool and a small viewing window appears, which you can drag across parts of the painting to see details close up.

Leonardo Da Vinci’s mirror writing

Leonardo wrote in Italian using a special kind of shorthand that he invented himself. People who study his notebooks have long been puzzled by something else, however. He usually used „mirror writing“, starting at the right side of the page and moving to the left. Only when he was writing something intended for other people did he write in the normal direction.
